Virtually all electrical installations work requires an electrical permit.
Electrical Permits are obtained by Master Electricians to ensure Code compliance. Consumers are encouraged to ask for a copy of the electrical permit. A permit exception would be simply replacing devices with like and kind. Master Electricians, Journeyperson Electricians and Apprentices are issued trade qualification wallet cards. Consumers are encouraged to ask to see them. Consumers can verify with the Safety Codes Council that they are dealing with an ‘active’ Master Electrician by visiting www.safetycodes.ab.ca. Credentialed Electricians or indentured Apprentices are required to do electrical contractor work.
Electrical Contractors should have WCB (Workers Compensation Board) coverage.
Consumers are encouraged to ask for evidence that this is in place, including personal coverage for working electrical business owners, and contact the WCB to confirm. This coverage protects all parties, including the home owner from a potential lawsuit due to a worker injury occurring on their property.
PEC’s are committed to ensuring these coverages are in place.

This Association is the voice of the electrical industry. Contact ECAA to ensure the Contractor is a member-in-good-standing. This Association is also the Registrar for the Professional Electrical Contractor (PEC), Certified Master Electrician (CME), and Registered Master Electrician (RME) titles in Alberta. These are voluntary titles pursued by Master Electricians aspiring to a higher professional standard, and it holds them accountable through legislation to their peers. Consumers are strongly encouraged to ask for this credential.
Important Message to Consumer
As a consumer it is advantageous to ask if the electrical contractor belongs to the Electrical Contractors Association of Alberta (ECAA). This association is the voice of the electrical industry in Alberta and is the registrar for the Professional Electrical Contractor (PEC); Certified Master Electrician (CME) and Registered Master Electrician (RME) titles in the Province.
